Dr. Perricone has written a number of books about diet and health including one that touted the weight loss advantages of green tea. That book was called “The Perricone Prescription”. Many people say that his appearance on the Oprah show was what started the green tea diet craze that we know today. It was so monumental because of one exchange between the doctor and Oprah. In that exchange, Oprah asked about a part of Dr. Perricone’s book that says if you replace coffee with green tea, you can lose ten pounds in six weeks. He said: “Coffee has organic acids that raise your blood sugar, raise insulin. Insulin puts a lock on body fat. When you switch over to green tea, you get your caffeine, you're all set, but you will drop your insulin levels and body fat will fall very rapidly. So 10 pounds in six weeks, I will guarantee it.” Of course, no one was sure how he could guarantee it, but you can imagine what kind of excitement a statement like that could bring about for people who are trying to lose weight! However, the truth is that there are many healing properties contained in green tea and studies actually have shown that consuming as little as one cup per day can aid in weight loss. Green tea has thermogenic properties that can promote fat oxidization beyond that which is provided by the caffeine contained in the drink itself. Even Oprah herself has implemented green tea into her diet plan and will agree that it has helped her immensely with her weight loss goals. She reports that the green tea gives her more energy, tastes great, and has shown that it really has helped her maintain her target weight easier. Not only does green tea help people lose weight, it also has many other health benefits such as lower cholesterol and blood pressure, preventing cancer, healing liver damage, and much, much more!
